3D Mapping of Chechin Itza by CyArk |
A back up is a copy of data from our database that can be restored at any point of time to reconstruct data. If the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased or overwritten or becomes inaccessible we can easily restore the data from the disk or archived copy.
We all back up our personal data which includes our photos, videos and other documents for data protection and for future use. What about monuments, castles, churches and other great land marks? What if we are able to create a 3D back up of these landmarks which will help for further research and other purposes? A non-profit organization named CyArk has created a digital copies of more than hundreds of worlds best known monuments, ancient statues and other landmarks. Its great isn't it!! :) :D They use 3D laser scanners, radar and a host to other technologies to create detailed mapping of the structures.
On 21st October 2013, CyArk provided an image generated by 3D laser scan data, which shows a perspective of Chichen Itza, in Mexico. Now they plan 400 more. Their primary goal is to digitally preserve the world's most precious landmarks. These can be used by tourists and educators.
Last month CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, developed a 3D mapping system. The Zebedee technology is a handheld 3D mapping system incorporating a laser scanner that sways on a spring to capture millions of detailed measurements of a site as fast as operator can walk through it. There were specialised softwares which converts the systems laser data into a detailed 3D map. With the help of this technology they develped a 3D map of Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was the first comprehensive 3D mapping of the entire building. Another advantage of this development is, suppose the monument gets damages due to a catastrophic or natural disasters such a earth quakes we can reconstruct it with the help of this technology. Hopefully we are expecting a future were we doesnt have to leave our precious landmarks or monuments behind. :) :D

I'm certainly not an expert, but I'll try my hardest to explain what I do know and research what I don't know. I would love to hear your thoughts! Be sure to check back again. I would certainly reply to your comments :)
